That's exacty what I would have expected, however it's not what I'm seeing.
All other applications (except FireFox) use the proxy settings from the
Network Preferences and work just fine, it's only Office that isn't behaving
as expected, and only when we use a PAC file. When I set the proxy manually,
it's OK.
Here's another symptom I found today - when I click Go -> Open In Browser on
the Web toolbar and enter a perfectly valid URL http://www.microsoft.com for
example, I get the same behaviour. A delay of 30s or so (during which Word
still functions normally) followed by the error as noted.
Interestingly, when I do set the proxy manually and follow a hyperlink (or
enter a URL in the Web toolbar or use Go... in the Web toolbar) the status
bar (at the bottom of the main window) shows the message "Word is preparing
to load this document" and a progress bar which takes a second or two to
complete *before* the browser launches and opens the URL. It's this that led
us to suspect that Word was trying to preload the page for some reason.
I checked the Help topic, and our pac file is configured exactly as described.
Any other thoughts?

I think what is happening is that when you configure the .PAC in the
browser, it affects only the browser's access. The .PAC is not in circuit
for Word's access, which is via the OS, bypassing the browser. When you
configure the .PAC in the network preferences, it should configure the whole
of TCP and work for everything on the computer including Word.

The behaviour we need is for Office to hand the URL straight to the browser.
