Re: Hyperlinks in word and proxy PAC files

Hi Stuart:
Word hands off any network call immediately to the operating system.
It has no knowledge of any proxies: Word calls "Network" and the OS takes
over.
Please take a look at the Mac OS System Preferences Help topic "Using an
automatic proxy configuration (pac) file".
I think what is happening is that when you configure the .PAC in the
browser, it affects only the browser's access. The .PAC is not in circuit
for Word's access, which is via the OS, bypassing the browser. When you
configure the .PAC in the network preferences, it should configure the whole
of TCP and work for everything on the computer including Word.
Hope this helps

Having a problem in Office 2004 for Mac with embedded hyperlinks where if
the Mac's proxy settings are set manually, the default browser (same
behaviour for Safari and FireFox) opens and the links work just fine. That's
not the problem!
If we use a PAC file to automatically configure proxy settings (which is a
must-have with 6000+ client machines on 200+ sites) then hyperlinks in Word
and PowerPoint fail, "Cannot locate the internet server or proxy server" is
generated after a 20s-30s timeout.
It's the latest (10.4.8) Mac OS and Office has all current updates.
It *seems* like Word is trying to open the URL before passing it to the
browser. I guess it needs to, in case it's an Office document, but as it
doesn't handle the PAC file correctly, it fails.
The behaviour we need is for Office to hand the URL straight to the browser.
Any ideas/help appreciated
