I have tried inserting text above the table, in the table, in the
document header; and all three. Word still crashes.

Your diagnosis may not, therefore, be correct. But I do have OSX
10.4.8, which may or may not be a factor.

Is there something else that is different here, between what you are
doing and what I am doing ?
