Daiya,Note for the record: After you key Command-Option-[minus] to remove a menu
I'm sorry for changing my name; Google automatically used my gmail
name, and I didn't realize it to keep the same name I'd had on the
other board.
I'll recap here what I've tried and what finally works.
Turning off Universal Access and Zoom didn't do it.
Cmd-option-8 sounds like a wild-ass guess from someone--the correct keyboardThat's supposed to turn off Zoom without disabling all of Universal
shortcut (by default) is cmd-option-minus.
Access, I was told. At this point, I've skimmed so many newsgroups, I'm
afraid I can't remember where I read that (except that it was on two
different groups).
The only thing that has gone wrong is the keyboard
shortcut to access it, not the command itself. The command is called
ToolsCustomizeRemoveMenuShortcut, and a different shortcut key can be
assigned via Tools | Customize, although you have to look under All Commands
in that dialog (I think).
Okay, I did misunderstand (I thought it was "RemoveMenuShortcut"
because I had already *done* Tools>Customize).
I looked under Tools>Customize>Customize Toolbars Menu.
I then selected "Commands" and "All Commands."
You're right: under All Commands, I needed
"ToolsCustomizeRemoveMenuShortcut"
And now it seems to work. Now I have Remove Menu Shortcut under my
"Work" menu, and if I click that first, I can remove it, even if I
can't get the shortcut keys to work.
Messing with the Library file sounds like a BAD idea, though very
unix-geeky.
Yes, it probably was a bad idea.
On a different question, someone suggested removing Work from the
toolbar entirely and reinstalling. I successfully removed it by opening
Tools>Customize>Toolbars and then dragging it off the toolbar. When I
quit Word and tried to drag it back on, I couldn't drag it.
Interesting. That seems odd, I'll try to investigate. Also, if you could
post a link to the macro that didn't work.
Here's the link for several Macros:

It *did* in fact work on my husband's computer; I can't explain why it
worked on his and not mine. Fortunately, I don't need it anymore.
Thanks again for all your help.
item and the pointer changes into a big minus sign, it can be disconcerting
to find that the minus sign changes into the usual pointer arrow once you
click on the Work menu -- especially if you recall that in Word 2001 and
before, it stayed visible. Don't be put off; continue with the pointer arrow
and when you release the mouse button the menu item at that position will
disappear from the menu.
Apple Computer's seemingly random allocation of keyboard shortcuts that have
long been established by one of its most important third-party applications
-- rather than those less used or not used -- is quite irresponsible IMHO.
I have listed some of these commands, and suggested work-arounds, in "Bend
Word to Your Will", available as a free download from the Word MVPs' website
(http://word.mvps.org/Mac/Bend/BendWordToYourWill.html).
