Re: In Presets-I've lost "grayscale" choice.

Hi Bob,
Setting Preset Color/Sync to Quartz Filter ?Gray Tone¹ alone, and saving it,
didn¹t increase the speed.
So I tried this:
In the: ³Copies and pages² default menu I went down to:
³PaperType/Quality²
Then selected ³Paper² and under Paper set the following settings
Paper Type: Automatic
Quality: Fast Draft
Color: Grayscale
I then went back and Saved As ?Grayscale Fast Draft¹ (My wording), and now
the ?Presets¹ in the Print Dialogue Box show ?Grayscale Fast Draft¹ and it¹s
defaulted which is the way I want it to be. I now have the fast print speed
I want?and had before?with acceptable black print on plain paper. As I
recollect, this is what I originally went through to get these settings the
way I wanted them. If I want color, I set preset to 'Standard' and go into
the other menus and fuss around changing things. I don't use color much. I
find I do have to make sure that when I go back to text, that 'Standard'
hasn't defaulted, which happens sometimes. Then I have to reset to
?Grayscale Fast Draft¹ which remains as long as I'm printing text.
I don¹t believe that the presets went AWOL whcn I installed one of the
updates. I believe they got lost when I spent four hours with HP on a
different technical issue. But who knows? A recent update may have
interfaced and caused the problem.
Anyway, I¹m happy, and thanks for reminding me about the path. Why there is
nothing about presets in ³Word Help² or Microsoft Mac Word 2004
troubleshooting is beyond me. At least I couldn¹t find anything.
NG Rules!

I believe the problem is due to revision of the print dialog by Apple in one
or more of the OS X updates. The Grayscale Preset may have to be
reconstructed through the list of settings in the Print dialog. I think I've
heard of them getting 'dropped' form time to time, but without any
indication as to why or how to prevent it. The Presets just seem to
sometimes go AWOL after OS X updates.
Open the list that reads Copies & Pages as the default. The first thing you
will want to look at is the Print Settings. ColorSync also provides a Gray
Tone Quartz Filter you may want to take a look at.
Once you make your settings, open the Presets list, Choose Save As and give
it a name. From then on you should be able to select it from the Presets
whenever necessary... Using other software as well.
If there is any problem setting it up thru Word, you can also do it from
TextEdit as well as other programs. Some time ago TextEdit was actually the
preferred avenue of approach, I believe, but it seems that some of what was
broken elsewhere has been fixed. IIRC, printer Presets have often been
reported as 'elusive' for some reason.

Hi Bob,
Thanks for your input.
I ran Repair disk Permissions successfully but it didn't fix the
problem.
As for the printer driver, the disappearance of the grayscale preset
followed on the heels of extensive analysis of the printer, on another
problem, with HP support, finishing with the download of the upgraded
printer driver which HP tech said was more compatible with my latest OS
version. (Apple is constantly sending me updates). I hesitate to go through
the uninstall process, because, following HP's direction in uninstalling the
older printer driver, there were many more items in obscure places that he
had me remove FOLLOWING the ordinarry 'uninstall' found in a dialogue box.
The version of the newly downloaded HP Device Manager.app is v.1.0.2
I recall when I first got the iBook G4 and the HP 1610 printer that I
had to talk to HP and/or this or another discussion group about finding the
simple black and white grayscale printing preset similar to what I had
running on my G3 powerbook and HP deskjet 882 C where the choice was more
readily available. I think the interface program then was PowerPrint, now
known as Strydent Company.
With the G4 and 1610, I learned a procedure to find and set the
greyscale that turned out to be easy and did not include reinstalling the
printer driver. I don't remember that method, but back then it turned out
to be the easy fix.
Best, Rafael

Hi Rafael -
If you haven't recently done so, you might want to Repair Disk Permissions
first. If that doesn't fix the problem you may need to update/reinstall your
printer driver, as it is responsible for most of what is presented in the
Print dialog... Word simply calls it up.
If these ideas don't help, please make sure to mention what version of OS X
& Office, type of printer & any other details that may be helpful. Without
that info, were just guessing at what to do.
