I'm thinking this is because if the template that the document was based on
is on the server, Word will try to find that template when it opens the doc.
If in the local document, you go to Tools | Templates and Add-ins, and
"automatically update document styles" is checked, for instance, Word will
find the original template, check if the styles have changed, and update the
definitions/appearance in the local doc.
I am not sure whether unchecking that box will prevent Word looking for the
base template. I don't think so, though it may be worth a try.
