Actually I see this from time to time even in Panther so perhaps Tiger
has just aggravated it. For example sometimes I start up Excel and it
just locks up. I force quit and start it up again and it is fine.

However I must reiterate my experience that in many cases problems are
caused by font conflicts. Use Font Book to resolve duplicates and to fix
any other skanky-looking situations with fonts. This has made a huge
difference for me. m.
