Hi Carsten,

Sorry, I don't know. Don't the relevant websites have full descriptions?
If no one here replies, try one of the Mac forums (MacFixit, for instance).

Glad the fix worked. Fingers crossed that it continues to do so.

what is TCC?

Onxy, YASU, Coctail contains groups of Utilities that are basically
built into UNIX but they a Quartz interface on them. so that you can
just choose item in typical Apple style.

I myself prefer YASU (Yet Another Systems Utility) which btw has just
been updated for OSX.4 in fact the update was released two days after
Tiger went to the Market. becareful they have an up-to-date version for
X.3.9 and X.4 they are not compatible with the other system. So download
the right one. MacJanitor is a One-Trick-Pony, its only duty is run UNIX
Cron jobs. emptying and reorganizing daily, weekly, and monthly log
files. reclaiming wasted space. This is built into OSX but you would
have to leave computer on overnight because UNIX sets the task to be
done only between 3:00AM - 5:00AM in the morning. And the computer must
be idle for them to update.

besides Cron Task, most utilities do some or all of the following:

Repair permissions
Update Prebindings
Clear Cache files (User,system,font cache)
Clear browser caches
Clear browser history's
Clear Cookie files
Clear logs (application , User, System)

(the above taken from YASU, but Onxy is similar, but, doesn't clear Font
caches all the other have similar features but some items are not covered.)

Hi Phillip,

TCC is Tiger Cache Cleaner, which I downloaded on Beth's advice and used
with succes.

I really appreciate your thorough answer, but I must admit I'm still not
sure whether I can keep using Cocktail which I initially bought after
reading MacAddict's Official MacHandbook when I got OS X (back in Jaguar
days) or if I should buy TCC. YASU also sounds good but don't you think it's
better to stick with one of this kind of utility? (actually I also have OnyX
lying around but that's not Tiger-compatible yet)

Any thoughts?

Carsten

for an all round user friendly, most useful to me is YASU.
It doesn't fix problems that Diskwarrior does, And there some items in YASU you have to be carful using like emptying the system cache. YASU even warns you.

While it doesn't dmage anything the first time your system reboots after doing this may take a long time to go from Blue screen to Desktop.

Reason is it has to completely build a new system cache. And if you have a lot on your hard drive that could take a while.

I have onxy , cocktail ,and many other I have Tried. On my OSX.3 Hard drive on my G4-500.

But on my PowerBook 17" I've only got YASU.
