Actually, the pilcrow button is a very gross way to toggle formatting
characters on and off, and I advise against using it. You surely want to
be able to see *some* formatting characters - for example, if you can't
see the paragraph characters at the end of paragraphs, you can't use
Word properly at all. Choose Word > Preferences > View to select the
exact set of formatting characters you want to see; for example, you can
turn off visibility of spaces between words as dots, but leave the
paragraph marks at the end of paragraphs in place. m.
