Open the Extensions folder located in the System Folder.

 Locate and move the four following extensions to the Trash:
   - Microsoft Component Library
   - Microsoft OLE Automation
   - Microsoft OLE Library
   - Microsoft Structured Storage

Empty the trash and launch Word 98. This automatically invokes the FRI
 feature because of the missing extensions. The First Run Install will
insert fresh copies of the extensions for you. Word 98 should now perform
properly.

I assume you are using Mac OS 9 and below
