The problem seemed to have popped up again. Trashing preferences doesn't
seem to get rid of the issue. Checking the permissions revealed that the
owner of the file is correct and the groups and others have permission to
read and write...

The only way it seems to get the e-mail working again is to pull the files
from a backup.
