Hi Norman:

I think Dayo is on the right track. Word does not "store" printing
preferences, as far as I know, it passes them on to the printer driver which
stores them if you choose to save custom settings.

When you installed Word 2004, it would not replace the printer driver, so if
you had settings stored, they would indeed stay there.

I think that's how it works... I couldn't get Word X to print at all on my
normal printer, so I never had a chance to customise anything :-) Word 2004
prints just fine, thank you :-)
