    Hi Ronald:

    You do not need to worry: the links update automatically in this
    circumstance, because if they did not the document would contain no text and
    the TOC could not be generated.

    So the reason the control is greyed out is because Word can't work any other
    way. Word 2004 does fix a few of these annoying interface bugs: Word X was
    a bit of a rush job.
