Not in my case...

Well, I think people would want the indents to stay, as that helps in
understanding the outline, I suspect it's the 36pt Heading 1, Bold 14pt
Heading 2, Bold Italic 12pt Heading 3 (for example) that they don't want
printing out, because who needs an Outline that looks like that? Totally
unfunctional.
And Show Formatting Off does hide indents that are part of the style, it's
just that Outlines are indented by definition. For instance, mine shows all
kinds of indents, none of which are part of my style formatting.
I got Word 2001 to print from Outline View with all text in my basic Normal
style (12 pt Palatino), by turning Show Formatting Off.
Since you say 2001 in Classic prints out text formatting (size, bold,
italic) even with Show Format Off, I wonder if there's something about Word
not communicating properly with the printer in OS X. It seems ridiculous
that they would have deliberately removed this useful function which
fulfills an obvious desire for a plain text outline.
This may seem like a small issue, but could be quite a big deal when doing
long documents in Word. At least there's the TOC workaround.
