It didn't. I also moved every other Microsoft file out of the
preferences. That didn't help either.

One of these is Norton AntiVirus 5.0 and 6.0. I have 7.0.2 installed,
so I tried turning the AutoProtect feature off. Oddly, things were
different, but still didn't work. Word 2001 launched and opened a new
window, but didn't quit, nor did it crash. Maybe "hang" is the word;
the cursor could be moved, but it didn't affect anything and I had to
reboot. Do you think this is significant?

The CD I installed Office 2001 from in the first place was already SR-1.

I didn't see a download like this so I downloaded the removal tool for
2001 and 98, and just ran the 2001 removal tool. This didn't help.

Dayo, thanks for all the help, but right now I'm lost in the woods. I
think I'll just have to calm down and ask whether I really need 2001 or
whether 98 will do. I'm also wondering whether something else is
getting flaky (hardware, software, etc.) Although Word 2001 never
works, now I'm getting some other crashes, for example, this
MT-Newswatcher program. My machine is now 5 years old, so it may be
time to replace it.

If I ever figure out anything I'll let you know.
Thanks again,
Steve
