I should think an intermittent hardware failure would show up more places
than just Word crashing. I'm running Word 2001 and 9.2.2 too but when I just
had this problem, restarting fixed it. I've only needed to reset PRAM when
my system bombs out entirely, so I don't think you should go there for a
Word error.
A Remove and Reinstall would take out Word 98 too, so maybe you don't want
to do that just yet.
If you can reliably reproduce the error, it might be worth doing a test for
extensions conflict, but I assume you don't have Conflict Catcher or other
software that makes this easier? Try booting with all extensions off,
although that might require some manual adjustment to turn on the extensions
Word needs.
Have you tried removing any add-ins from the Word start up folder?
IIRC crashing on launch can be related to corrupt fonts. "Remove all fonts
from your System folder except for the Apple fonts. If that fixes it, then
start restoring your fonts. Put half of them back and see if Word crashes
on startup. If not, try the other half. Then cut that in half, etc. until
you isolate the font that's causing the problem and delete it." [Quote from
Beth Rosengard]
Do you have Virtual Memory on? (although you only need to set it to 1 mb).
Hope something helps,
