Not to be an alarmist, but if thing are happening as you describe you could
have some [potentially] serious problems with your Mac. If you haven't done
so recently I would suggest that you first *back up* your HD - or at least
the personal data files if not the whole thing. If you don't have a backup
program I recommend SuperDuper! Which you can download as a free working
trial from the following site:
http://www.shirt-pocket.com/SuperDuper/SuperDuperDescription.html
Once you get backed up run Disk Utility - Verify Disk & post back with the
results plus some more specific information:
Specs on your Mac - disk space used/free, RAM, etc.;
Exact Version of OS X;
Correct version of Office (PPt) - look in PPtMenu> About PPt - what you
mentioned (Powerpoint X version 1) doesn't sound quite right:)

BTW: Going for that long without ever saving the file is quite likely what
caused/contributed to the system freeze in the first place.

Had auto-save on and also did many saves on my own. Of the 46 slides

and when I looked at the screen, found I only had the first and last
slide remaining. The file on my desktop now only has those two slides.
My reboot did nothing to help. Seems to me there should be a temp file
location to recover this data. But I cannot find one and don't really
know where to look. Do you or anyone else have an idea on this aspect?
I am using an G3 iBook, and Microsoft Powerpoint X version 1.
