we've explained the product you are recommending is a windows only application. Its useless information for people That use Mac.
when recommend a product pleas check the operating system requirements. If its for PC only its useless on a Mac. And if its Mac only its useless on a PC.

Command option keys (command Key looks either like a 4 leaf clover or an

This brings up the Force quit menu. If the file is toast won't make any
difference to the file. a Force quit menu comes up chooseexceland it
will quit. you changes to the document will be lost if there are any.
I would then try re importing the file and try again. IF you end up with
the same mess then you know that file will simply not work onExcel2008.

reloads the "recovered" file. If I go to closeExcelit then asks me if I
want to save the file, cancel or delete the recovered file.
If I hit save as - regardless of the file i save it as,Excelcrashes and
the cycle begins again.
If I hit delete -Excelcrashes and the cycle begins again.
It's totally stuck on this file and there's no way I can get out of it. Does
anyone have any ideas on how I might resolve this?

Your files may be damaged. I think you can try a popular Excel file
recovery tool called Advanced Excel Repair to repair your Excel file.
It is a powerful tool to repair corrupt or damaged Excel files.
Detailed information about Advanced Excel Repair can be found at
http://www.datanumen.com/aer/
And you can also download a free demo version at http://www.datanumen.com/aer/aer.exe
