PERPLEXING TEMPORARY LOSS OF SENT MESSAGES WITH ENTOURAGE 2008

Hi, I looked hard for an answer that fitted this scenario and cannot find one. Also I am aware of different views/flags that can hide messages and also the fact one sometimes needs a search to locate an email.
I am seeing this a lot and wondered if anyone else recognized the behavior, and how it can be prevented or fixed...
What happens is I write an email and send... no problem, it goes out OK and gets there. BUT sometimes I just want to check back and see what I said in a given email. I go to where it should be and... I can't find the sent email anywhere.
Yes I have done all of teh tricks exhaustively -flags, views, searches, close/reopen, reboot... no its gone... even if I search on unique words in the email, the mail I sent cannot be found... and yes, I have got "retain a copy" checked yes in preferences.
Its a real problem as sometimes its urgent to refer to a past email and...its gone.
But then amazingly they turn up later...can't say when, not predictable. This drives me nuts as I cant control the behavior.
I just switched from Outlook 2003 on the PC and in that I knew where I stood - there was always a copy in the sent items list.
I really need to get this fixed, and was wondering if anyone else on the forum is seeing similar behavior. Why can't I just see all emails all the time? Why that perplexing temporary los of sent messages?
