SMTP Authentication failed

Whenever I try to send an email from the email address mac2@xxxxxxxxxxxx or when I try to receive email from other accounts, I get an "SMTP Authentication failed. The username/password or security settings were incorrect" (something like that). It then asks for an account name and password. Whatever I type is incorrect (even when I try to change the login SMTP options in the Account settings for mac1).
The SMTP site used is smtp.1and1.com. I cannot access the account for www.1and1.com (no one can remember the password for the account used on this site).
Is there some way around the SMTP authentication? Creating a new account is not an option (the account used to work in the past, so there are many important emails in the Inbox).
