No problem. :) To track down this issue, would you mind trying something
out for us please? On Apple's Terminal app, try typing the following:

telnet [SMTP host for your pop account] 25
helo [any text]
mail from: [your user id]@[domain.com]
rcpt to: [usrname]@[badhost.com] OR rcpt to [badusrid]@[goodhost.com]

Can you please take note of the SMTP error that you get back after you
enter the "rcpt to" line?

I'm afraid it does not appear possible to reproduce this issue from outside of
our institution. It only occurs when a person connected to our internal
network emails a user that does not exist in the email system.

Emailing from outside of our internal network results in a typical bounce back
email stating that the email could not be delivered.
