Shot in the dark, but how close to your quotas are you? Are you in the
receive but can't send category? Or in the completely-over-quota category?
Or none of the above?

There really isn't a difference between the network protocol used if you
specify a NetBIOS name vs. the http(s) URL, so I don't understand the
statement "it beats up on my exchange server and is waaay too slow," unless
you're talking about Entourage absolutely (as opposed to the relative merits
of the two ways of addressing an Exchange server).
