Compact - which used to be known as "Typical Rebuild" - copies the various
bits of the database which are scattered about on your hard disk into a new
contiguous area of the HD. The out-of-order lists are due to something the
developers once referred to as a "bubble" and relate to some blip connected
with a minor gap in the blocks on the disk - maybe unwriteable, maybe just a
break at an unfortunate location in the database. I don't know the real
details. Anyway, the copying to a new area of the disk fixes the problem.
It's pretty scary when you first hit this one, and nice when it fixes
itself.
If you see just a mis-ordered list (no jumping about) or undeletable
messages in a single IMAP folder, all you usually need is a "Repair Message
List" in contextual menu on right-click (control-click) on the folder, or
press opt-cmd-L.

I was busy and didnıt read carefully so I thought you were advocating the more complete rebuild solution. Thatıs why it took me a little longer than usual to thank you for the advice. Totally fixed. Is there a FAQ, or can you offer a thumbnail explanation of what happened and why a compact would fix it? Not that important, but Iım a curious sort. Thanks again. Itıs totally cured.
