It sounds like you setup a POP account, which automatically downloads all of
your from the server. Your create an IMAP account. Remove the incoming
server name on your pop account so that no new mail arrives while you are
setting up your IMAP account. Once your IMAP account is set up, move your
mail back to the server(IMAP account).
