You shouldn't have to enter any DNS stuff in the client machine.

That error message is indicating that the connection is never getting to the
mail server. So, the problem is likely connected with either the entry for
the POP Mail server (or IMAP mail sevrer if its an imap account), or the
smtp server for sending mail. You can check which is giving the trouble by
selecting just 'send mail' or just the account entry (for receiving) in the
drop down box when you hold the mouse button down on the 'send and receive'
toolbar button.

The other option is that the network is not set up properly. Can you access
external web pages in IE or Safari? If you can, we can rule out network
connectivity problems.

Now, did you create the account from scratch, or import from an earlier
version? If you created from scratch, did you use the assistant that tries
to guess at the correct account settings?

While you're answering these questions, I would double-check the entries for
POP server and SMTP server in the account settings - erase whatever is in
there and re-enter it manually, then try again.
