This problem started about the same time Microsoft apparently
introduced a "security patch" on the Hotmail servers on April 1, 2007,
which had the side effect of making it impossible for Entourage to
send emails through Hotmail.

Microsoft has no plans to fix the Hotmail security patch, or to
provide support for Entourage users, as a newer version is available.

Does anyone know why I can't access my Hotmail account using Macintosh
IE5?

You've answered your own question. The security patch has crippled
access via Entourage X and earlier as well as IE 5.23.

Although I doubt the inability to access Hotmail via Entourage X and IE
5.23 was intentional on Microsoft's part, both of these products are
beyond their five year support policy which is stated here
<http://support.microsoft.com/gp/lifemacfaq>. That means no further
updates or patches will be released.

If you decide to continue using software beyond its support lifecycle
then you assume the risks of using outdated software.

Entourage 2004 is still supported and will continue to be supported
until mid 2009. Have a look at this link on Microsoft's website
<http://support.microsoft.com/lifecycle/?p1=2490>. From what I
understand it does still work with Hotmail.

IE 5.23 was discontinued and is no longer available from Microsoft.
You'll need to find another browser or email application for accessing
Hotmail.

Hope this helps! bill

Hello,

Thank you for the clarification.

I'm very glad I discarded MSN as my internet service provider, because
my new ISP, Verizon, provides email which my wife can access with her
current version of Entourage. I don't agree with the philosophy that
she should have to keep purchasing software upgrades in order to
maintain the same level of functionality in a computer which is only
about 5 years old and which works every bit as well as the day it was
first plugged in.

I suppose that Microsoft is operating within their published policy on
this issue, but they are still behaving in an arrogant fashion and it
does no favors for their public image. The very least they could do is
to stick a notice on the MSN and HOTMAIL home pages to alert customers
of the issue, and to send out an email to their entire MSN / HOTMAIL
customer base to inform them (there are no problems reading emails,
just sending them). Very few people will go to the extent I did in
tracking down the problem.

Just for your information, my PC is years older than my wife's iMAC
and is running Windows 98 SE. I have my issues with this setup, but I
have never had problems accessing my MSN.COM email account.

Back when I first signed up with Qwest/MSN in about 2002, I had a big
fight with MSN customer support because I was unable to get email to
work with the version of Outlook Express included with the Mac. My
argument was that I was purchasing internet service from MSN and they
advertised support for Mac OS X, and they had an obligation to provide
email service which my wife could access with her Mac as part of the
deal. I logged many, many hours of phone calls before the issue was
finally resolved by MSN providing me with a free copy of Entourage. It
was like pulling teeth.

I really hope that if MSN or MSN's partners (e.g. Qwest) are
advertising that their service is compatible with Mac OS X, that they
are very specific as to the system requirements.
