Alrighty - completely new to this part of MS - what are the licensing
requirements for this? Do I have to get some sort of CAL for each
laptop, each AP? And, if so, do I need to get it all twice if I
install 2 IAS servers for fault tolerance?
I have asked my "licensing guy" but he's hemming and
hawing............
Thanks!
Using IAS does not impose any additional requirement for CALs. The Windows
Server CAL requirements are all you need to meet for your clients.
In addition, there are no MSFT CAL requirements for third party network
access servers, such as wireless access points, on your network.
As you probably know, IAS is Microsoft's implementation of the RADIUS
protocol, and can be used as a RADIUS server with RADIUS clients. I
mention
this to clarify that RADIUS clients are not client computers -- they are
network access servers like APs, dial-up servers, VPN servers, and
authenticating switches.
And that is where there are some limitations.
In Windows Server 2003 Standard Edition, you can configure up to 50 RADIUS
clients. The number of access clients (client computers) that connect to
the RADIUS clients is not limited though. So this means with this product
you can deploy 50 APs with an unlimited number of wireless clients
connecting to these APs.
In Windows Server 2003 Enterprise Edition you can configure an unlimited
number of RADIUS clients in IAS.
