As I was receiving email, a message from Domino's Pizza froze the
email program and the OS. I tried a few times to reopen the email
program, but every time, everything froze. So I deleted the entire
Outlook Express 5.0 program, went online and downloaded it again. But
when I opened the "new" program, all I can see is the not completely
downloaded Domino's Pizza message and the whole computer freezes
again! How can I get rid of the old messages in Outlook Express,
which won't open completely without freezing, so that I can download
the program again without any messages being stuck there?

Thanks for any advice. I'm feeling kind of desperate.

You may have to telnet to the POP3 mail server and delete the offending
message from the server. Google to find the POP3 commands, if you can
connect to the mail server with that protocol. POP3 uses well known port
110. So you start off with say:

$ telnet mail.server.top-level-directory 110

Trying <ip-address> ...

Connected to mail.server.top-level_domain.

Escape character is '^]'

+OK mail.server.top-level_domain POP3 Server Process -bla bla bla

user <your_user_id>

+OK User name (your_user_id) ok. Password, please

[mail servers are always very polite]

pass <your_password>

+OK x messages in folder Inbox -bla bla bla

You get the gereral idea...

I'm sorry, I really don't get the general idea. I did go to the
server's website and discover that the message is no longer there. I
didn't think it would be, since it's jammed in my Outlook Express
inbox. Of course, it's possible that I'm simply not comprehending
your advice. I'm not a tech head in the least. If there's something
I'm not getting that you think would be useful, please explain more.
As it is, it looks like I'm stuck with checking my email on the web-
based server, at least on this one computer. Thanks for your post.
