Hi Ricky,
thanks for your kind response, even though your proposal did not work out: I
tried the option key at startup, and the program did offer the compacting
procedure; but then this failed (error: "end of file") and the dialogue asked
whether I want a compact rebuild, which I confirmed (as a second choice), but
this failed too (mentioning the same error: "end of file"); then came the
proposal to increase memory, which had been at 7168, and which I increased to
10240, but still nothing worked - on the contrary the dialogue said that
maybe the repair was impossible....
So it seems that there is no solution. Still, I wonder: what does "end of
file" really mean? I noticed that the "messages" file in idientites pretends
to contain 0 kB, which is extremely strange....
Anybody out there who would know something more?
Regards
Sascha
The "end of file" error means that the contents of one or more files aren't
complete in some way. The database compact can sometimes resolve this.
If the Messages file says that it is 0Kb, I'd start looking around to see if
you have any other Messages files. In fact, you may even have other
Identities folders, and one of those may contain your real content.
Assuming that you can find files of some magnitude and put them in the
correct place (i.e. Mac HD:Documents:Microsoft User Data:Identities:[your
Identity]:) then you may be able to resolve the problem by renaming/deleting
these files...
1) Mac HD:Documents:Microsoft User Data:Identities:[your
Identity]:Preferences
2) Mac HD:System Folder:Preferences:Outlook Express Preferences
Deleting file (1) will result in all settings within Tools > Accounts being
resent, so you'd need to re-enter those when you eventually get back into
the application.

Ricky
