Exactly. Calling using IP address that is the problem. I can try with him
this weekend and see what happens. I remember trying it before and didn't
work.
I tried the following today.
I logged onto an ILS server with different email addresses from two
different computers from my home. Both the names were visible in the ILS
server.
Visibility in the ILS has no bearing on the ability to call. Are both
computers on the same network behind a router?
I right clicked on the name and clicked "call', hoping I would get a
netmeeting invite on the other computer. It didn't work and presume
firewall/router is the problem.
If they are both behind the same router/firewall on the same network they
should be able to call each other via an ILS(assuming there is not a
software firewall blocking the incoming call) as the registered IP
addresses, though private addresses are both on the same network and
therefore reachable.
I also tried to download version 5.0 of MSN messenger for XP, put it in
WIN2K compatibility mode, but unfortunately MSN is not letting me sign with
that version.
Out of curiosity, how was MSN messenger was connecting us through netmeeting
without an ILS server? In your site meetingbywire.com, you mention MSN
messenger does it in a different way.
It did something similar -- since Messenger knew the IP address and had the
ability to pass it to the caller via the IM protocol it passed the address
(after starting NetMeeting)to the callers Messenger which then generated a
call via the callers NetMeeting using the passed IP address as the calling
address.
Anyway, I am out of luck here and not sure what to do. It's kind of sad as
you mention that microsoft removed the start netmeeting option.
Well they are deliberately phasing out NetMeeting -- this was just one of
the steps.
I has worked
for me for the past four years like a charm and I was able to see my folks
(they are in india) which was a big boon for me. That's why I am trying
frantically to do something.
Well obtaining their IP address and calling directly should work (unless
something at their end (are they behind a NAT -- maybe their ISP is putting
them behind a NAT or blocking in some way -- private NAT'ed IP addresses
are 192.186.x.x, 10.x.x.x or 172.16-31.x.x.).

Thanks again for your help. I think I am there. I've Windows messenger 4.7
on XP and when I put it in W2K compatability mode, I got start netmeeting
back. Hoepfully this should work.
