I was using Netmeeting to video conference with my folks back home and it
used work just fine, even though they've 56K dialup line. (I've a broadband
connection).

They had an old version of MSN messenger 6.2 and it had the start netmeeting
option and their OS is 98. My OS is XP and the XP messenger doesn't have the
start netmeeting option. So they'll invite and we used to chat
un-interruptedly with good video and audio.

Two weeks back my dad was not able to sign into MSN and was forced to
upgrade to MSN 7.0. I also have MSN 7.0. Now when we try to video conference
through MSN messenger, the video works. The video quality is better, but it
very slow. The audio doesn't work either.

I don't know why you are having a problem -- I would consider Messenger
audio/video overall quality higher than NetMeeting and generally it
provides a more reliable connection strategy (as it has a mechanism for
going throuth NAT routers that is about as good as it gets)

Firstly, I am very thankful to you for taking the time to answer my
question. I really appreciate it.

I understand what you are saying. But MSN messenger audio/video doesn't work
at the same time, even with broadband connections on both ends. My dad is
using a dial-up connection. So it's even worse.

My sister who also has XP and MSN 7.0 is able to do a voice chat. Not sure
what's wrong with my messenger settings.

1. Is there any way I can video conf through NetMeeting, like I used to. Is
there a way I can call my dad for a conf in Netmeeting using his IP address?
Not sure how it will work because he is connecting through an ISP.

Yes using the IP address should work. All other forms of NetMeeting call
initiation are geared around obtaining the other ends IP address silently
to make the call -- using the IP address directly just cuts out the middle
man. The trick here is determining and communicating the IP address. The
help about in NetMeeting should determine the IP address -- that address
must then be communicated to the caller -- email or instant message works
here. The IP address should be determined and communicated just before
every call as it can change with each connection.

If either end is behind a NAT router/gateway/firewall the whole thing gets
very complicated though (and in some cases not possible).

Exactly. Calling using IP address that is the problem. I can try with him
this weekend and see what happens. I remember trying it before and didn't
work.

I tried the following today.

I logged onto an ILS server with different email addresses from two
different computers from my home. Both the names were visible in the ILS
server.

I right clicked on the name and clicked "call', hoping I would get a
netmeeting invite on the other computer. It didn't work and presume
firewall/router is the problem.

I also tried to download version 5.0 of MSN messenger for XP, put it in
WIN2K compatibility mode, but unfortunately MSN is not letting me sign with
that version.

Out of curiosity, how was MSN messenger was connecting us through netmeeting
without an ILS server? In your site meetingbywire.com, you mention MSN
messenger does it in a different way.

Anyway, I am out of luck here and not sure what to do. It's kind of sad as
you mention that microsoft removed the start netmeeting option. I has worked
for me for the past four years like a charm and I was able to see my folks
(they are in india) which was a big boon for me. That's why I am trying
frantically to do something.

Again thanks for the help.

2. If I can't, what should I look for so that atleast I can do a voice chat
through MSN

I don't know -- you might want to try posting in the messenger forum where
more knowledgable help might be available.
