Re: I can't get the pop3 connection working

To clarify - it is all about the one Hotmail account. Initially I connected
with a HTTP (webDAV) connection - this has worked for some time. Then, a
couple of nights ago, I attempted to use the SSL based POP3 connection type -
this is where the problem exists. I set it up alongside my HTTP connection
in the same Outlook 2003 profile. It (POP3) didn't work. I added an SSL
based POP3 connection to Yahoo into the same Outlook profile (as mentioned in
the original post as a "I have a similar account") - the Yahoo connection did
work. I installed the Outlook Connector (deltasync) - it took over my
previous HTTP and POP3 accounts and set itself up as the only Hotmail
connection. I then re-added my SSL based POP3 connection to Hotmail
alongside the Outlook Connector one and the POP3 failed to connect as before.
The Hotmail SSL based POP3 connection has never worked. The SSL SMTP part
of this connection has worked every time. I added the detail of the SMTP
settings as they are configured at the same time and if someone asked me
about this I wanted it to be on the record that it works and how I configured
it as part of the one "email account" settings that include both POP3 and
SMTP.

If you telnet to an open port, you always get some kind of answer. Try it
yourself. If you telnet to pop3.live.com port 999, which is just a random
port number and not open, you will not get a response at all. If you do the
same to 995 you will get the "null" response as I mentioned earlier - this is
a useful, quick way of confirming a port is available to you. I am aware
that you do not get a full response to be able to test email communication.

Thanks for the advice on AVG - I will need to uninstall as you suggested
before categorically saying it is not affecting the result.

I have configured the pop3 SSL 995, smtp SSL 587 with authentication
etc. The mail sending works ok via port 587. I have a similar email
account configured for another service provider and this works
succesfully, so I guess that rules out firewall and antivirus
restrictions.

Yes I am attempting to connect to a Windows Live Hotmail account
using the POP3 connection type.

Hotmail account, accessed via POP. Is this the one (of the several you
mention) with which you have problems?

I have used the HTTP (DAV) method up until now and I have also just
installed and been able to use the Outlook Connector successfully.

Presumably this is for the SAME Hotmail account, accessed using
Deltasync (because DAV access is discontinued) using the add-on.
Presumably you do NOT have both a POP and HTTP/Deltasync account
defined in Outlook for the same Hotmail account (or one of them is
disabled); otherwise, you would be trying to get Outlook to do multiple
polls on the same account at the same time.

I'll assume the same Hotmail account, the POP account in Outlook was
deleted or disabled, and you just use HTTP/Deltasync via the add-on to
access your Hotmail account.

The "similar" email account was an SSL based POP3 to a yahoo account.

Don't know why a Yahoo Mail account was mentioned. Is it the Hotmail
or Yahoo account with which you have problems?

My ISP is woosh.com who uses the services of quicksilver.net.nz,
though the same port for SSL POP3 (995) was used by Yahoo SSL POP3
connection successfully.

Your ISP has their own e-mail service. Is this the problematic
account? You mention Yahoo again. Does your ISP use Yahoo's e-mail
services? Is it with your ISP's, Yahoo's, or Hotmail's e-mail service
with which you have problems?

I can telnet to port 995 of the server specified (pop3.live.com) from
my PC (Windows XP SP3) and get a "null" response (it clears the
command prompt screen and leaves a cursor flashing).

So we're back to a Hotmail account. You cannot use telnet to make an
SSL connection. I specifically mentioned that. Hotmail's POP mail
server doesn't listen on the non-SSL port (110). So you can't do the
telnet test.

You mention using a POP account in Outlook to access Hotmail. You also
mentioned using the Outlook Connector add-on to access Hotmail. Which
one are you using NOW?

I have Zonealarm free and AVG free installed. With both of these
turned off, I get the same result.

If you use a POP account in Outlook, does it connect to Hotmail?

If you use an HTTP/Deltasyc account by using the Outlook Connector
add-on, does it connect to Hotmail?

For the SAME Hotmail account, you should be using only one mail
protocol to access it. If you have 2 accounts in Outlook defined for
the same account, delete or disable one of them.

Regarding AVG, disabling its e-mail scan function does NOT eliminate
the e-mail traffic going through its transparent proxy. The e-mail
traffic still goes through their proxy and disabling e-mail scanning
just means they won't interrogate that traffic. You have to uninstall
AVG and then then perform a *custom* install to get their e-mail
scanner component out of the way.

I have been very careful to check my settings. SMTP is set for "My
outgoing server (SMTP) requires authentication - Use same settings as
my incoming mail server" (SPA not in use anyway but the tick is off
all the same).

You started with reporting a problem in *receiving* e-mails because you
mentioned the POP server problem. Now you mention the SMTP server for
outbound e-mails. Do you also have a problem *sending* e-mails through
your Hotmail account? Above you said that sending was working.

If you are using SMTP to send e-mails then you should be using POP to
receive them. You mentioned using the Outlook Connector add-on but that
requires using HTTP/Deltasync to both send and receive. So just WHAT is
your setup inside of Outlook regarding the number of e-mail accounts you
have defined within it? And which mail protocol does each use? And, if
more than one is for Hotmail, do they point at the same Hotmail account?

My POP3 "server timeout" is set to 1min and I have selected to "Leave
a copy of messages on the server" "Remove from server after 10 days."

I have set up the same POP3 setting on another, similar machine and
software setup at home with the same result.

Have you ever used Hotmail's webmail client to log into your account?
