How do I change the default Hotmail icon on my Windows XP Pro desktop
How are you accessing Hotmail? I can think of three possible ways:
1.) Web browser (often MS Internet Explorer 6, or MS Internet Explorer 7).
2.) Email client (MS Outlook Express, if the account is old enough, Windows
Live Mail, or MS Outlook with the Outlook Connector).
3.) MSN Browser, an application which is used with an MSN account, either
dial-up, or a "Bringy Your Own" HSI connection (or, possibly, an ISP
partner).
I've had Hotmail accounts since 1999, or so, and never had a desktop icon. I
know how I'd create one, if I wanted one; I'd create a desktop shortcut to
either a web browser, or viable email client. But those would allow me to
change the icon.
So you will have to bear with those of us who are trying to figure out how
you are accessing Hotmail, because it is hard to relate your description of
what you see to what we know.
So, what does this icon actually look like. A butterfly? A lower case letter
"e"? Something else? And what is in the "properties"?
I've got one desktop icon with the AT&T "Deathstar" logo, which has two
tabs, labeled, "General", and "Web Document". On the "General" tab is the
icon, plus a lable, "AT&T Games Player". Below are some additional lines.
The "Web Document" tab has three lines labeled, "URL:", "Shortcut key:", and
"Visits". The "URL:" label has a box with an entry:
<"http://www.att.net/s/userprofile.dll?upa=redirect&upred=staticpage.dll,ep%3d1300%26spage%3dall%2fplayer.htm%26medid%3d4136284%26media%3dgames.bellsouth.net%2fgh%2fsolitaire.html%26only%3dy%26_pgoffset%3d".>
This shortcut will invoke my default browser, Opera 9.62, and open the site
in a new tab.
Most of my other desktop shortcuts are more typical, pointing to a local
file system location instead of a URL.

properties box looks exactly like what you described except the URL label is
"Today and a whole bunch of letters and character" Sorry not very technical
but I am trying my best to be as concise as possible.
So can I change the icon for a URL file set as a desktop shortcut that when
I double click on it takes me directly to my Hotmail account?
