Hello Peter,
Hotmail is undergoing a change. And all Hotmail accounts usernames/pw are now LiveID's(the old term was Passport).

With respect to Hotmail:
- One Hotmail interface has the option to switch between the 'Classic' and the 'Full Version', the new interface being rolled
out
combines the two into on single interface
You can read about the newer Hotmail interface at this site.
http://windowslivewire.spaces.live.com/blog/cns!2F7EB29B42641D59!7426.entry

Its been quite some time that I've used W2K3 and have never used W2K8, but in XP and Vista Control Panel/User accounts has an
option to Manage Network passwords, you might delete your Hotmail account username if present. Doing so may force the login
screen
to appear when accessing Hotmail web interface(hotmail.com or mail.live.com)

At the same time the my.msn.com web page is being changed. Quite a few different scenarios are occurring after logging on with
their LiveID(hotmail.com, msn.com, or live.com) accounts.
- some folks are reporting the my.msn.com is the same
- some reporting it with different options and an ad in the upper right
- some reporting with different options and no ad in the upper right,
- some reporting it as loading next.my.msn.com with and without ads
- and finally with it loading msnmember.my.msn.com with no ads regardless of a free, premium, legacy pop3, or hotmail plus
account
of any form(hotmail.com, msn.com, live.com)
For those not being directed/redirected to next.my.msn.com a link on the my.msn.com page or msnmember.my.msn.com page may be
available in the upper right that states:
"Check out the next version of My MSN!"
That link takes one to:
http://next.my.msn.com/

The above indicates that some type of geographic, logon bay, or server approach is being used to roll out changes over an
extended
period of time for the Hotmail Web UI and the MyMSN page.

I have a Hotmail account. I opened it to check my mail from the www.msn.com page by clicking on the Hotmail Link

To my very big surprise there was no sign in screen and the Hotmail page that opened was the new as you call it Hotmail Live.
Well it contained all the folders and addresses and all info that I have set up in 1995. All 18 folders and all contacts from
that time including all saved emails and files etc etc

Next (after looking it over for 1 hr or so ) I decided to close it and type in www.hotmail.com in my address bar in the taskbar
and hit enter.
Now Hotmail opened which was set up as 12 months ago. No changes with only the default folders as I knew it and nothing saved
as
it was setup

I repeated this process back and forth and opening Hotmail from the msn page gives me a different setup(as I did in 1995) as
does
opening Hotmail from the address bar in the taskbar which I set up 12 months ago.

Can anyone explain this to me

Single and same Hotmail ID and password
