Many thanks for your response. Apologies for the typo - but I'm afraid I am
disabled, and spend long periods lying on my right side, typing with one
finger of the 'cack hand'!! So I had, indeed, entered 'pop.ntlworld.com'.
As for your other suggestion - regarding the use or non-use of user names -
I started to play with variants on this theme, and eventually discovered that
the name WITHOUT the domain brought up a box requesting password details for
the network (not had one of those before), so I just re-entered what I had in
Outlook, and lo! Things have started to appear in Outlook inbox and
designated folders for certain items where rules exist!
The only problem now is how to get the messages from Virginmedia to transfer
into Outlook.
Once again, many thanks for all your help. Much appreciated.

For a start, that should be 'pop.ntlworld.com' and not
'popntlworld.com' as you have written. Otherwise, the settings
should be identical to those for OE. It looks like the username
should be the bit of your email address before '@'; if you still get
the same error, try the whole email address as username.
If you get an error message, right-click on it, copy and paste it
into a reply here; it might include more clues to a solution than
your précis of it.

Using Vista SP1, IE7 and Outlook Pro 2007
I have just changed ISP (mainly because the line speed - I was
paying for
'up to 8MB/Sec' - was regularly running at between 5 and 15
KB/Sec) to a
cable supplier, VirginMedia, with a maximum speed of 'up to 20
MB/Sec' (for a
similar price). So far I have had up to 3 MB/Sec, but this could
be down to
problems with IE7. But, hey, this is a lot better than 15 KB/Sec
!!!!
However, a slight problem! VirginMedia won't support Outlook
(although they
do Outlook Express), whilst their own mail program is pretty basic
and 'naff'
looking. Before the change, I had all my mail coming into Outlook
(much
better looking and more professional) with no problems. So, having
made the
change in supplier, I input the POP and SMTP settings for Outlook
Express
into Outlook - and now can send from there, but not receive any
mail in
there. The error message I get is that the server does not
recognise the
username and / or password (both of which are definitely correct).
Is there a difference - generally speaking - for the POP and SMTP
settings
for OE and Outlook - and can anyone suggest a work-around?
(Current settings
'popntlworld.com' and 'smtp.ntlworld.com').
