Re: Email account spam/hijacking

** HOW was my account compromised? Is there likely to be something on
my computer that I need to clean? Is it a straight hacking via bot,
or is it a virus or something?

More likely you used a weak password. Anyone receiving e-mail from
your Hotmail account, including all those untrusted sites where you
used this account, already know your username to your account since it
is the same as your e-mail address. All they have to guess at is the
password.

Weak password is a possibility - its only strength was that it wasn't a real
word at all. My bad - all the strong passwords I used for it were impossible
to remember.

** Will this affect any of the people who received the spam from me?

Well, um, sure, because they got stuck with the spam that came from
your account.

Nah - I wanted to know if _their_ addresses and the like are okay.

** How can I stop this happening again?

Change the password on the account - if you still can. Usually when an
account gets hacked, the perpetrator changes the password so that
account remains theirs. If you are using a freebie account and you
can't get in, it's their account thereafter. If it is a paid account,
you'll have to contact Hotmail support to get your password reset.

Password has been changed. The account is still mine.

Why do you care about that contacts list? You just said it is a
garbage account used at untrusted sites.

It was, however, the repository of all the addresses of people I chat with
on Instant Messaging.....

** How do I get Hotmail to accept incoming Gmail from my IP address,
as all Gmail email seems to be now rejected by Hotmail.

Rejected? Or does your Gmail sent to Hotmail simply disappear (never
shows up in recipient's mailbox in any folder and you never get back a
non-delivery report from Hotmail)? There is a big difference.

Rejected, because I get a notification saying that Hotmail won't accept the
email.

Answers would be greatly appreciated, because I'm quite upset by this.
On an account that you claim is a garbage account?

Yup. It's not used for outgoing, and it's not my daily email, but it is used
for chat, and it is used to sign up for sites that are liekely to add my
email to a spamming list. I don't mind being spammed there - but I do mind
spamming other people.
