In the last couple of days, I have struggled to figure out why my
computer stopped loading some websites. I first discovered the
problem when I could no longer access my yahoo email account.
The Problem:
I could log in to yahoo, but once logged in, I could not go to my
email inbox. I could to the login page: mail.yahoo.com. Then after
entering my username and password and pressing sign in, the webpage
would go blank and act like it was loading, but after a long while of
being a blank page, it would timeout. I also found out that other
yahoo websites would not load. I'm not sure what is the failed pages
have in common.
Attempted Solutions:
I tried pinging several of the broken sites and ran a tracert for
some. nothing significant was discovered. i turned off all firewall
and tried the sites again - no luck. then i rand Ad-Aware and SpyBot
S&D to see if some cookies were messing up the works...still nothing
changed.
Solution:
Finally, I found some forums discussing similar problems. i'm not
sure what the MTU setting is - for your router, but several of the
sites mentioned trying to decrease the MTU size. this website was
particularly helpful: http://help.expedient.com/broadband/mtu.shtml#winxp.
to find the MTU size of your router, try 192.168.1.1 in the address
field of an IE window. you may be required to enter a username and
password. i checked the MTU size of router and it was initially set
to "auto" and i guess - 1500. when i changed it to manual and 1492, i
then tried the yahoo mail account again. IT WORKED! so, i saved the
new settings in the router, turned the firewalls back on including the
pop-up blocker...the mail account still works.
Hopefully this information is helpful to anyone else who may be having
a similar problem. Send me a message to let me know if you find it
helpful or need more information.
