Norman, Michael,
Thanks very much for your persistence!
Hopefully this will clear up any ambiguity: To me, an attachment is a file
(word, jpeg, spreadsheet, etc) imbedded (ie attached) in an email. Detaching
an attachment means copying the file to an area of local storage (typically
the hard drive of the computer you are using) where you can then access it
independently of the original email. This process is very similar whether
using web mail or an email client, the biggest difference I can see is that
on an email client you will effectively end up with two copies of the file -
one within your local mail database and one wherever you copied it to when
you detached it. I know that with some email clients at least, it is also
possible to delete attachments to save space on the mail database.
So, my problem is when trying to detach a word document from hotmail (and
another webmail account). When using detach from a webmail account it seems
to me that it kicks off a file download dialogue, which suggests that the
problem may not be email specific, but download related instead. This was
borne out when I tried to download Microsoft's Windows Live Desktop Mail
client - I can't get past 71% downloaded!!
The problem exists on both my PCs at home: one is XP with Norton and the
other is Vista with McAfee. This leads me to think that this issue is either
with my router or my ISP. I haven't tried the download from outside my home
network infrastructure, but I will do.
Thanks again, and if you do have any more thoughts please feel free to share
them with me.
Best Regards,
Michael

What type if mail account is this? Is it perhaps a Hotmail or MSN.

What type of attachment is it?
Are these particularly large attachments?
You mention sending to a different e-mail account. Are you the original
sender of the attachments? Or are you trying to forward the message via
a web mail account? If so, is the problem sending or after the message
arrives at the other account?
If your anti-virus is set to scan e-mail as it downloads, that might the
issue.

I have a strange problem in that some file downloads (these are
attachments
within an email) are stopping or freezing, typically at the same point
(eg
52%) every time I try. I get the same problem on both of my computers
at
home, one of which runs XP and the other Vista. I received the
original email
in Windows Live Mail, but have tried sending it to a different email
account
(not Microsoft) and still get the same problem. I have tried accessing
using IE7 and Opera and get the same problem. I have even tried using
a
download manager but still to no avail.
I've had a good look at my wireless router (linksys WRT54GS) config
but
can't see anything in that which I think could be causing the problem,
so I
am truly stumped.
Can anyone please help me?!!! This is driving me nuts!
Thanks in advance,
Michael
