I have used it for authenticated SMTP before with no problems, but I
have never used it on a non-standard port number before, which makes me
think I haven't used the correct syntax to state the port number.

Using port 587 requires the SMTP Authentication protocol. I did find
one reference for the program that says it supports that.

But you'll have to see the program documentation on how to enable that
feature.
Additionally, SMTP Authentication requires your account name and
password, typically the same as your POP3 mail account name and
password. So you'll have to supply that to the program.

I am having problems configuring SMTP with this client. I know my
settings are fine as they work in outlook. I think the problem is that
I need to tell POP3 pal to use a non-standard port number for sending
mail (587), the help file says the following
"Yes. POP3 Pal normally uses the standard port numbers for POP3
servers
(110) and SMTP servers (25). To specify a non-standard port number,
simply follow the server name by a colon and the port number, like
this: localhost:1110."
As I say I am trying to use port 587, but all I get is an
"authorisation error", as I say I know the settings are fine as I have
used same ones in outlook with no problems.
Any help appreciated.
