Hotmail uses the HTTP protocol to deliver mail to a client which is
proprietary and very much unlike POP3. The access through the servers isn't
like accessing the web page at all and the specifics elude me. However, I
shouldn't think it would be too difficult for someone (obviously someone
with sufficient priviledges) to insert a message like this blocking all
access to the account until a certain criteria was met. I'd guess that
they'd be able to do much the same thing if, as an example, people had tried
to enter that account too many times with a non-working password. They
could, I'd *assume* (and we all know what that means) insert a temporary
lock via that same protocol which would disallow access until the user had
signed in with the correct password after a certain period of time had
passed or the password had been reset. I'd think that would be a better use
of the technology. I'd also not mind this use of the technology if it wasn't
every second email.
As an expiriment, I just couldn't help it, I logged on to the web page. I'm
actually in the account right now via the web and, using OE, sent myself two
test messages to block the account. All of my mail appears just fine in
there and the Hotmail message isn't in the account. No amount of clicking
(as I was in the account already) seems to bring up the page where you match
the picture and fix the account. I still get the error message and the mail
isn't being sent from OE. I signed out of the account via the web and then
signed back in and, sure enough, there was the match the picture page. So my
guess is it's inserted at a level that's only accessed through the same
means that the HTTP mail is accessed with a client similar perhaps to a
gateway page at a hardware firewall that wouldn't be accessable from a
computer on the DMZ?
Again, these are only guesses and I've no idea exactly how it's done but
it's probably something similar to that and probably not anything that
difficult to adjust to a different set of rules. I'd like to see something
like having to authorize once a day or every 50 mails. That would be a pain
but worth it to seriously put a damper on the use of the Hotmail servers for
sending UCE.
I'm going to cross post this as well though I don't belong to the other
groups normally I'll add them and see what's going on with it and to see
what people think of my theory.
