I didn't see Lyndsey asking how to abandon a more potent local e-mail
client with better features and instead get stuck with a
webmail-for-dummies interface whose only advantage to POP3/SMTP is when
roaming, like when travelling. However, Pop Goes the GMail gives
POP3/SMTP users an interface by way of a local proxy to the webmail
interface (just like YahooPOPs works for Yahoo). And no ads when using
    the proxy interface.

However, if Lyndsey can't figure out how to read the help web pages from
her ISP or figure out how to call their tech support for a service for
which she is paying then it very likely she won't be able to figure out
how to sign up for GMail account (but after first having to hunt around
for someone proffering an invite to GMail since it is still not
    available for open subscription).
