"They force us to use Hotmail ..."
Okay, so where's that Microsoft branded gun pointing out of your
computer forcing you to use their particular e-mail service? Yeah,
didn't think so. You choose whatever ISP that *YOU* want. You can use
their e-mail service or someone else's. No one is forcing you to use
Hotmail.

>From a company that has proven over two decades that they don't have a
good grasp of security concepts regarding operating systems, you also
want them to be the primary provider for anti-virus software?

If you use the webmail interface to Hotmail, they do check for viruses
but only when it makes sense, like when you opt to download the
attachment from their webmail server to your host. Per their help:

-----
If Hotmail determines the attached file type is potentially unsafe, the
file is blocked and cannot be downloaded. Otherwise, do one of the
following:
- If no virus is found, click Download File.
- If a virus is found that can be cured by McAfee VirusScan, click Cure
and Download File.
- If a virus is found that cannot be cured by McAfee VirusScan, the file
cannot be downloaded. Reply to the sender and request a virus-free copy
of the file.
- If a virus is found, the file cannot be downloaded. Reply to the
sender and request a virus-free copy of the file.
-----

So they DO check for viruses. They don't provide the anti-virus
software, so if a virus is missed then bitch to McAfee. If you use an
e-mail client to yank your e-mails then it is your responsibility to
have an anti-virus program to check your e-mails. Imagine the foul cry
from users that would bitch about e-mail downloads taking so very long
because the server was doing a virus scan before letting the e-mail get
downloaded. Microsoft isn't going to bother wasting their CPU cycles
checking an attachment for a virus unless you actually tell them that
you want it. When using their webmail interface, and if you decide you
want the attachment, they do perform a virus check. When you download
the e-mails, remember that attachments are not something separate that
tag along with the message. The attachment is also *within* the body of
the e-mail right along with all the other text you read.

Stop being cheap and get your own anti-virus program. AVG has a freebie
that will run locally. You can also use online virus scanning from
Symantec (McAfee might have one, too). Neither is Microsoft going
provide you with a free printer because you happen to buy their word
processor.
