I believe that you need MS Outlook 2002, or later. MS Outlook Express just
does it, as far as I know. I don't use MSOL, so I can't offer explicit help.
For MSOE just follow the steps in the New Account Wizard, being sure to
select HTTP as the server type, and Hotmail as the mail provider. That
should actually be preselected if you entered your Hotmail account address
initially. Complete the steps in the Wizard and you should be set.
I have found that letting MSOE go directly to a Hotmail account Inbox on
startup *and* sending/receiving email on startup can cause double messages
to appear in the Inbox. The solution is to either uncheck the selection for
letting MSOE go to the Inbox, or the selection to send/receive email on
startup.
Also, you will see in your Folders Pane an icon (looks like a filebox)
labeled "Local Folders", and another (looks like a rainbow butterfly)
labeled, "Hotmail" (unless you change the name in Account Properties). All
of the folders directly under the "Hotmail" icon are actually located on the
Hotmail server, and mirrored locally. Those folders will only be available
while you are online, not locally, and if you delete any Hotmail message
from the web interface, it will not be available in MSOE because of that. So
if you need to archive Hotmail messages locally, be sure to create a folder
under the "Local" icon, then move or copy the messages from the Hotmail
folder to the Local folder.
One more thing, a quirk about the Bulk Mail folder. If you highlight a group
of messages, then drag and drop them, MSOE often errors after moving only
the first message in the group; then loses all of the messages in the Bulk
Mail folder. The only solution that I have found is to highlight all of the
messages I want to copy, or move, then use the Edit menu and click on the
"Copy to Folder...", or the "Move to Folder..." choices.
