I would try emptying:

C:\Recycled (Recycle Bin)
C:\Windows\Temp
C:\Windows\Temporary Internet Files

Delete the Swap file (if it exists in XP), you'll probably
have to do that in DOS, or XPs version of DOS.

Sometimes checking/unchecking a box then Applying, then
rechecking/reunchecking a box can effect repairs.

TweakUI may be beneficial.
