Re: What OS do your ASP.NET develpers use?

Tech Tip: Click here to run a free scan for Windows Errors and optimize PC performance

If your developers already have enough Win2000 Server licenses, how
about grabbing VMWare Server (Free) and running virtualized server
environments on each machine? I'd say develop and perform most
debugging on the XP machines, then each developer can periodically
deploy to their own virtualized appliance for testing on 2000 server.

In fact of you go this route you can create a Windows 2000 Server
appliance once, then have everyone use a copy of that it for their
testing. That way everyone is testing clean against the same
configuration.

I work at a fortune 500 retailer with over 250 in the IT department. Our
standard desktop PC is WinXP. But on the web development team we have about
10 developers who all use Win2000 Server on their desktop. The thinking was
since the public website applications they are building must run on Win2000
Server, then that is the environment they should develop in. Now there is a
growing desire within our Information Systems department to return our web
developers to the corporate standard of WinXP on their desktop and a single
Win2000 (or Win2003) Server to share for development. This causes a number
of problems, the worst of which is only one developer can debug at a time. I
was wondering what other ASP.NET developers use for their desktop
environments.
