Strange problem with Indexing service on windows 2000 server

System is Windows 2000 server with all patches/SP/etc. This problem is
replicable on a 2k3 server as well as an additional test 2000 server.
Have multiple directories containing word files and PDF files. Word
files were created with one of several templates on the system. The
process to create the word files through the templates is done with a
COM+ application that is in wide use and does not have any issues at
any other locations. When Index server encounters one of these word
files, it just stops - no futher indexing occurs. Eventually, it starts
consuming system resources, the machine is rebooted, and it starts all
over again. Only 1 file in tens of thousands was indexed (a PDF file),
all the rest appear to be "behind" the word docs in the queue to be
indexed. The problem occurs on any system where I copy one of the word
documents created with any of the templates. Problem is really twofold:
* What the heck is wrong with the templates?
* How do I fix the generated files once I have working templates so
index server will index them (tried some word automation - didn't work.
Tried a .NET app to pull the data out of the word doc, it was
unpredictable - didn't always grap correct text)
I have the templates and example word files, but do not see a method to
add those to this post. please email me ryan.rounkles@xxxxxxxxx for
samples.
Thanks in advance. This has had me stumped for over a year!
