Indexing large amount of files on a different server

Hi,

I plan to index a large amount of files (about 2million+ files, mostly MS
Word document with 3-10 pages).
This index will be querry by an intranet web application and I would like to
get the best performances on these querries.

I would like to know if it is a good idea to build the index on another
server from the file server? If yes, where can I find an estimate of the
time it would take to build and to maintain this index?
