If you are indexing a virtual directory that is pointing to the NAS share
then Index Server uses the connect as account for the vdir.
If you added the share manually to your catalog then Index Server uses
whatever credentials you specified when adding the share to the catalog.
Otherwise we use the SYSTEM account.

| Because we are using a NAS we have to use a domain account that can
| read the files on the NAS. It does make sense that the crawl won't work
| if its using a local machine account but how would I find out which
| account IS is using to search? Given that the entire website is stored
| on the NAS it seems strange to me that IS could have trouble reading
| the files, but permissions are always something of a tricky proposition
| so it's very likely I'm wrong.
