In addition to Jeff's comments:

a) ASP.NET v2 will output XHTML 1.0 as standard according to Scott Guthrie's
blog (he's the ASP.NET PM)
b) If you are concerned about cost, I would look at getting the MS Action
Pack. That gives you access to a whole bundle of server and client software,
Office etc for $699/year.
