The applet experiences this problem whenever it uses the latest Sun JVM,
regardless of browser. The Microsoft JVM does not seem to experience the same
problem.
At first, I thought it was a JVM issue, but we have another program whose
job it is to check on the status of the production servers. Since the
installation of the .NET Framework, it has been periodically unable to
retrieve a very simple ASP document from the web servers on occasion. I
suspect that it is having the same problem, as the program used to run fine
for days on end before the installation.
